Entry Three : Information System & System Methodology

Hello,

We have learned about information system (IS) and system methodology as our third learning outcome for introduction to information technology course. I would like to reflect back on IS and system methodology  as I understood in my classes. Firstly, IS is a set of components which deal with input, processing and output. IS is also called CBIS ( Computer based information system). It has six components which are people, hardware, software , database, telecommunication and procedures. The functions of IS are to support business operation and to support management.

There are many types of information system. However , we have learnt the four information system which are the basic  information system that we have to know for an organization. They are TPS (Transaction processing system), MIS ( Management information system) , DSS ( Decision support system) and ESS or ES ( Executive support system).

In an organization , TPS is the backbone system of the organization. In TPS, business events and transactions are the inputs for the system and the outputs are receipt and report of the activities. TPS is used by operational managers and supervisor.

After TPS system, MIS system is used by  the middle managers in order to produce  report by planning and organizating the information that captured by the TPS system.

DSS is used by tactical manager to provide solutions and make decisions. The inputs for this system are internal and external information of an organization. For output, graph and texts report are produced.

Moreover , we have learnt  about  ESS system. It is a special type of information system which is a combination of DSS and MIS. It is designed to support higher level of decisions making in an organization.

System methodology is a process of designing , testing, and implementing a new application or program. There are six participates in system methodology. They are project manager , programmer, stakeholders, system analyst, support personal and users.
Example of system methodology

We have learned three basic type of system methodology. They are SDLC (system development life cycle ), prototyping and STRADIS.

SDLC is also called structured approached or waterfall model. It is comprehensive method. It can be used for any kind of information system. SDLC has five stages which are system investigation, system analysis, system design, system implementation and system maintenance and review.

Another type of methodology is prototyping. It is suitable for online system. It has four steps which are determine requriments, develop prototype, review prototype with user, and implement and use system.

The final type of system methodology that we have learnt is  STRAIS. It also has four stages  which are detail study, designing alternatives, physical design, and implement system. This methodology is similar with waterfall models or SDLC.

Entry Two : IT and ICT

Hello ,
Information technology and business are becoming inextricably interwoven. I don't think anybody can talk meaningfully about one without the talking about the other.
Bill Gates

In my second entry, I would like to reflect back on what I have learned about IT (Information Technology ) and ICT ( Information Communication Technology ) during classes. Nowadays , people often call our era as information technology era. Information plays important role in the age of globalization.IT is any computer based tool that people used to work with information and to support the information and information processing needs of an organization. There are two concepts in IT which are IT architecture and IT infrastructure. IT architecture is a plan or map of information for an organization, and IT infrastructure is the physical facilities such as IT components , IT personal and IT services .

ICT is actually based on IT. It is the combination of the technology and media broadcasting in order to manage and process information. ICT plays very important role in our everyday life . ICT normally use in education, business organization, banking, government organization and so on. In the age of ICT , there is no one who do not deal with ICT.

Entry One : Data , Information and Information Management

Hello ,
Information is the oxygen of the modern age. It seeps through the walls topped by barbed wire, it wafts across the electrified borders.
Ronald Reagan

As a first learning outcome, we have learnt about the different between data , information and information management. From my understanding , data is the raw facts or materials which is used to input into a computer system . Normally , data can be numbers , characters , image , audio  and video. Data , left by itself , cannot be meaningful .

When data  is organized together as input , the combination of data comes out  as information . In order to get information as a output, data need to be processed by using I-P-O method ( input-processing–output method ). Information is used to persuade and influence people , in decision-makings and as capital resource for information-based products and service . Normally , information has two basic elements . They  are reach and richness. Reach refers to the number of  people , the participants , in sharing information and richness means the quality of information.

Information management is used to manage the use, value and distribution of information. Information management normally contains people , content and technology . Information management is also used to support better decision – making , to improve the efficiency  and productivity , and to faster professionalism in running business.

My Purpose of Writing Reflections

I normally ask myself about my perspectives of learning such as “ why is the purpose of learning ? “ and so on . Finally , I came out with  that I want to store knowledge and generate them to use in my life long decision-makings  or choices . In order to be generated , I have realized that I have to reflect what kinds of knowledge that I have already stored . In my opinion , reflection is very helpful  for me to know whether I have already learnt or just gone through. I usually tend to forget the 80 % of what I had learnt in my classroom or lecture . By writing reflections ,  I can not only review  the lessons  , but explore more about the lessons .  Moreover , it is supportive to organize and use my knowledge  wisely . Therefore , I have promised myself to write reflections as much as I can .
